Hurtigruten
Powder Cruise

We all agreed that this is the ultimate way to combine skiing and adventure travel. The big difference between us and the blue haired pensioners that cruise with Hurtigruten is that we bring our skis and a minibus. Our plan is to make a Legendary Ski Safari with the help of this cruise ship and go from Bergen to Lofoten and Narvik in a week.

Hurtigruten departs every evening from Bergen, and calls at 34 ports on its journey north. There are high mountains which invite to incomparable skiing very close to many of these ports.

Imagine yourself with tired legs after a day on the mountain, roll in with the minibus on the ferry, take the elevator up to your cabin, jump into the Jacuzzi and then enjoy a nice dinner before falling asleep gently cruising to the next port. Go out on the balcony and see the sun come up over the majestic Norwegian Alps, have a breakfast before the minibus rolls on to a new untracked mountain.

This procedure repeated throughout the week, except for a few nights where we believe there is reason to stay overnight. We know that the weather on the Norwegian Vestlandet is anything but stable. Therefore, the program is more than flexible. To get the very best we bring one of Norway’s most experienced skier, Torkel Karoliussen, a star in Free Radical Ski Films, with us as a local guide. Responsible for the safety is our own mountain guide Pelle Bagewitz.

The tour includes:

All cruises with Hurtigruten, minibus to and from skiing, lift tickets, accommodation in double rooms on the boat and at the hotels, breakfast, lunch, dinner, local guide, mountain guide, cat skiing, Rubber Inflated Boat transport and a guide from Alpine Legends that ensures that the journey becomes legendary.

Number of Ski days:
6 weather permitting

Frankenstein

That the story of Frankenstein is written by a 19 year old on a trip in the Alps is little known.

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin was on the run with her lover and poet Percy Bysshe Shelley visiting Lord Byron in his villa on Lake Geneva. It was the rainy summer of 1816, after history’s largest volcanic eruption (Tambora, Indonesia) when the three chose to sit inside by the open fireplace and read German horror stories to each other.

Lord Byron thought that they would all write their own supernatural tale. Mary wrote a draft during a sleepless night and with encouragement from Percy completed her world famous novel. Some recent researchers claim that the name Frankenstein is taken from Burg Frankenstein in Darmstadt, a place the author is said to have visited on the way to the Alps. Interestingly, in Lucerne, just north of Engelberg they ran out of money and returned to England. He was broke and she was pregnant.

A fate similar to many a ski bum?

In 1120 Knight Konrad von Sellenbüren wanted to found a monastery, the question was just where it would be. One night the good Knight Konrad had a revelation that he would let a bull lead the way.

He did so and when he came to the valley where Engelberg is today the bull stopped and Konrad understood that he had found the right place. One day when the monastery was completed Konrad and Abbott Adelhelm tried to think of a suitable name for the monastery. Suddenly they heard a choir of angels sing. They turned around and saw the angelic choir up on top of the mountain Hahn. Engelberg, Angel Hill, felt suddenly a very suitable name, something we are happy to agree with.

They defied “a roaring snowstorm and lost a large number of elephants”, but persisted and eventually camped north of the off-piste slopes of Gran Paradiso.

January Free ride

One of our absolute favorite assignments during the intense winter season is the Free ride-trip.

Together with a certified Mountain Guide, often our permanent companion with a special eye for virgin powder, Pelle Bagewitz, we tour around with a minibus in a group of six to eight people. The Mountain Guide takes decision on the best runs of the day and our Alpine Legends guide handles the logistics of booking accommodation, restaurants and bars.

A Free ride-trip can be four to eight days. Besides the feeling of being part of this fortunate group of ski enthusiasts, the unforgettable memories consist of good local food, glacier tours, laughter, helicopter skiing, odd bars, sunny picnics, comfy duvet and at least one encounter with an Alpine Legend…

Facts

January Free ride is one of our open Free ride trips. In the Italian Aosta Valley we hike with skins on our skis in March-April and stay in the mountains huts with a 5-course dinner. If you are a group of friends with the same level of skiing ability, we can create an unforgettable ski adventure. We will take you to our unique pearls in the Alps. The price will depend on the choice of flight, accommodation, etc.

Queen Margerita of Savoy was a keen mountain climber, and to her delight the highest ever hotel was inaugurated in 1878 in Olen pass at 2909m, high above the village of Alagna Valsesia.

The founder was shoemaker Giuseppe Guglielmina, who became a hotel entrepreneur. This is where mountaineers could rest on their way to the top of Monte Rosa.

Today the Rifugio Guglielmina is run by the sixth generation Guglielmina, namely Alberto, a former shoemaker. Since only a very few years there is heat and running water in the hotel, and an impressive wine cellar with around 6000 bottles. Guglielmina is where we like to steer our guests’ skis for good food, a grappa in front of the stove, a good night’s sleep and a completely legendary sunrise.

Trygve Smith

The fact that the ski resort of Megève was created by Baroness Noemi de Rothschild is almost written in stone. But who was her Norwegian aide, peer, consultant, who found the site? In dusty tome, we have found the following;

Trygve Smith was born in 1880 in Oslo and died in 1948 in Oslo. In 1902 he wins Sweden’s first organized ski jumping contest in Gothenburg in front of 10,000 spectators. For the historically versed, this is the period of the Swedish Norwegian Union.

In the book “Ski-running” by Ernest Cushing Richardson from 1905 and dedicated to the Ski Club of Great Britain Trygve is mentioned “for many a useful hint and word of advice”.

1909 Trygve jumps 46m in Davos but falls while a Harald Smith (a relative?) sets the world record by 48m. This is all happening in the legendary ski jump Bolgenschanze which today is the name of a hot après-ski place just below the ancient ski jump.

During the Olympics in Stockholm in 1912 a Trygve Smith plays tennis. Might it be the same man?
